Renting a Car in Dubai: Documents, Age Rules & Tips for a Smooth Rental in 2026

Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore Dubai. You move on your own schedule, reach places the metro doesn't serve, and avoid the unpredictability of peak-hour taxis. The process is straightforward once you know what to bring and what to expect.

This guide covers everything a first-time renter — tourist or resident — needs to know before arriving at the counter.

Documents Required to Rent a Car

For tourists and visitors:

  1. Original driving licence from your home country
  2. International Driving Permit (IDP)
  3. Passport with valid UAE entry visa or arrival stamp
  4. Credit card in your name (for the security deposit)

For UAE residents:

  1. Valid UAE driving licence
  2. Emirates ID
  3. Credit or debit card

Digital copies are not accepted at pickup — bring original documents. Cards must have sufficient limit for the security deposit, which varies by vehicle category.

Minimum Age and Licence Requirements

Vehicle CategoryMinimum AgeLicence Held For
Economy and Standard Cars21 yearsMinimum 1 year
SUVs and People Movers21 yearsMinimum 1 year
Premium and Luxury Cars25 yearsMinimum 2 years
Sports Cars25 yearsMinimum 2 years

The minimum legal driving age in the UAE is 17, but rental companies apply their own minimums for insurance and liability reasons. No exceptions are made — if the primary driver does not meet the age requirement, the rental cannot proceed.

What Is Included in a Thrifty UAE Rental

Every standard rental from Thrifty UAE includes:

  • Basic CDW insurance — covers damage to the rental vehicle (subject to an excess amount).
  • Third-party liability insurance — mandatory under UAE law.
  • Pre-fitted Salik tag — toll charges billed at cost.
  • 24/7 roadside assistance — available anywhere across all seven emirates.
  • Unlimited mileage on most vehicle categories.
  • Free delivery to your hotel, residence, or any of our 50+ branch locations.

Optional upgrades include full damage cover (reduces the excess to zero), personal accident insurance, child seats, and additional driver registration.

Rules and Responsibilities for Rental Car Drivers

  • You are responsible for all traffic fines incurred during the rental period. Thrifty UAE will charge these to your card on file plus an administration fee.
  • Accidents must be reported to the police (999) immediately. Do not move the vehicle before the police arrive and issue a report — the insurance claim requires it.
  • As a tourist, you may only drive a rental car or a vehicle owned by a first-degree relative. You cannot drive a friend's privately owned car on your IDP.
  • Return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel, or a refuelling surcharge applies.
  • Vehicles must not be taken outside the UAE without prior written approval. Cross-border trips to Oman are sometimes permitted with the correct documentation — ask at booking.

Booking Tips for First-Time Renters

  • Book early. Peak season (October – April) sees high demand. Booking online at least 48 hours in advance guarantees vehicle availability and often better rates.
  • Choose the right vehicle. Economy cars are ideal for city driving. If you plan desert or mountain excursions (Hatta, Liwa, Jebel Jais), choose an SUV.
  • Consider a monthly subscription if your stay exceeds three weeks — the effective daily rate drops significantly compared to short-term rental pricing.
  • Check the vehicle on pickup. Walk around the car with the agent and confirm that all pre-existing damage is documented on the condition sheet before you drive away.
  • Save our emergency number. Thrifty UAE 24/7 assistance: 800-4770.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. All Thrifty UAE rentals cover driving throughout all seven UAE emirates with no additional charge for inter-emirate travel. Driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, or any other emirate is fully permitted under your rental agreement.

Yes. Additional drivers can be registered at the time of booking or pickup. The additional driver must meet the same age, licence, and document requirements as the primary driver. A small fee per day applies for each additional driver.

A grace period of one hour typically applies. Beyond that, you will be charged for an additional day at the agreed daily rate. If you know in advance that you will need the car longer, call us to extend the rental — this is usually more economical than paying the late-return daily rate.

Basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and third-party liability insurance are included in all Thrifty UAE rentals. These cover most scenarios but come with an excess (deductible) amount. Full protection with zero excess can be added for a daily upgrade fee at booking.
